Steve Lyons
Steve Lyons is an artist and gallerist based out of Chatham, MA. He is renowned for creating what is internationally known as “sculptural paintings.” This breakthrough technique utilizes heavy impasto to create heightened dimensionality on the canvas, and has captured the attention of critics, collectors, artists and the general public throughout the world.
Lyons first gained wide recognition in 2012 for his signature “Momento Paintings”– small coastal studies and abstracts on scrap lumber–when they were “discovered” by an art critic from Europe. Since then, he has received awards and accolades for his innovative approach to painting. In 2016, he was named one of the “Top 5 Expressionist Artists in the World” by the American Art Awards and the following year they named him second in the world for Abstract Expressionism. In 2018, Art Tour International Magazine listed him as one of the “Top 15 Artists in the World to Watch.”
He has exhibited extensively throughout the world, including Freising (Munich), Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Sitges (Spain), La Paz (Mexico), and Poznan (Poland), and in the U.S., in New Haven and Greenwich, CT, Boston, New York, and, Canton, Ohio. He has also been featured in numerous publications, including the Huffington Post, Du Jour Magazine and Art of the Times, as well as the award-winning television show, Chronicle. His work is included in private and institutional collections both domestically and abroad.
Born and raised in Portsmouth, Ohio, Lyons began painting as a child and by age eight, had won his first competition, in Canton, Ohio. He earned a B.A. at Eastern Kentucky University, and an M.A. at Louisiana State University—where he majored in journalism and minored in art and was a Walter Hitesman scholarship recipient. Before calling Chatham, MA, home, Lyons resided in New York City, New Haven, CT, and Boston. He currently works out of his studio in New York City and Chatham, MA.
